We take our social responsibilities very seriously and we have drawn faithfully on Zanzibar’s rich and ancient traditions and culture, while employing over 70 local artisans to build, furnish and maintain our uniquely authentic property.
Our business model is underpinned by ownership that lies very substantially in local village hands. Our village first employment policy means that every single one of our highly trained staff of 16 people hails from and lives in the Matemwe area. We also run a successful apprentiship programme for promising high school leavers from Matemwe village. Leavers have acquired a high level of skill in competencies such as kite surfing, house keeping, swimming pool maintenance, makuti construction, henna painting, facebook and much more.
We also have a deep seated respect for our stunning environment – hence our use of the most natural building materials and the many palm trees growing up through our buildings! We also uphold the highest standards in sustainable tropical luxury, and will never charge you for having unfettered access to the fastest Wi-Fi available in East Africa!
Most of our delicious fruits & vegetables are grown by a cooperative of local farmers that we helped to put together as an informal social enterprise on agricultural land a few kilometres away.
Matemwe Bandas makes a monthly contribution to the Matemwe Village informal health care fund administered by the Shea (local village chief) and other community leaders. The fund is drawn down on when villagers who lack the means require medical intervention for serious illnesses.
We are a genuinely local and international impact investment business and we invest heavily in our community.
